So chapter seven in Proverbs is a recap on chapter five, talking about immoral women and warning us to stay away from them. The chapter starts out like the other Proverbs, the father, God, talking to the son, us, and giving us some kind of warning and telling us to be aware of what is to come if we do this particular act. Again, talking about wisdom being a treasure and to keep it close to us and to write these commandments deep within our hearts.
This woman who is described in this chapter, can mean so many things. I keep getting these links that are videos that talk about the world we live in. How so many people are consumed by the world and all that it has to offer, or what they think it has to offer. The chapter goes on to say that a naive young man crossed the street near this woman’s house, getting too close and she started to draw him in. The world does this to so many of us, the things we watch, what we listen to, the “fun” habits we have or partake in, the Bible is very clear about this; 1 John 2:15 says this, Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. James 4:4 goes on to say, Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to do anything that would make me God’s enemy, and I don’t think anybody would want that. By the time the naive man crossed in front of the house, the woman came out and was dressed seductively and approached him. So many times we know what the outcome will be for our mistakes, yet we do them anyways, just like this guy. The passage goes on to say that the two made love, even though the woman was married.
The last portion of the chapter again warns us to pay attention and not to wander down the path of the world, don’t follow the trends, just because your buddy is doing it, that doesn’t make it right. Just like this woman, the world can fit right into the last few verses; 26 For she has been the ruin of many; many men have been her victims. 27 Her house is the road to the grave. Her bedroom is the den of death.
Don’t be of the world, just be in the world, and seek out ways each and every day to change the world, let the love and grace of God shine through you and help change the people who you are around everyday.
