Envy

January 15, 2015

Envy – a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck.

I have made a few posts already about envy and jealousy, why, because its a big deal, and it is something that people struggle with…especially myself.  One of my early posts I had put a very strong and powerful verse that speaks clearly of what God thinks about it.

The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.  Galatians 5:19-21

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.  This is not wisdom that comes down from above, but  is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.  James 3:14-16

A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.  Proverbs 14:30

These are just a few of the many verses that God speaks to us about and his thoughts on envy. Why would we every want to do something that God hates so much, do we not want to be like God?

God never said we can’t have nice things, but once we put that nice thing above Him, then we have a problem.  But the reason for this post is not only for the envy and jealousy portion but to stop and think about yourself for once.  Not in a selfish way, but look inward and find out what God has given you, that is uniquely you and what you are here on this earth to do.  God has a plan for you and me and all we have to do is have a relationship with God and walk with Him daily and He will reveal and help us through all the days of our lives.

Another very powerful verse I came upon is this; Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.  1 John 4:8

This verse ties right into the envy discussion, in this way, when someone is jealous of someone else or their belongings usually have a little bit of discontent and resentment in their hearts and usually love isn’t there.  But again, anyone who does not love, and that means everyone, not just mom and dad, brother and sister, best friend, you need to love everyone…even your enemies, does not know God, because God is love.
