What are New Years Resolutions?

So back in my middle school and in some of my high school years, my mind functioned and worked a lot different then it does now. So back then, I had a huge problem with OCD and trying to make everything perfect. And when I say everything, looking back at it now, it seems like I went a little overboard with some of the tics that I had. So to past me, New Years resolutions were a HUGE deal. It gave me this sense that this was the perfect time to try and start doing something different, generally it would help better my life.

That is what we do as a society. We have this idea that just because we go from one day to another (just like we have been doing for the past 364 days of the year) that there is something magical about this night. It is no surprise that most New Years resolutions don’t last. A few numbers that I found, about 40% of Americans make New Years resolutions but only about 8% keep them. Why? Its all about a heart and mind change, it’s not just because we go to sleep and wake up ready to get started.

Joshua 24:15 says, but if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. You may be thinking, how does this tie into what we are talking about. But choose TODAY who you will serve, God or something else? We all serve something or someone whether you realize it or not. But to me, New Years resolutions are nothing more than the worship of something other than God.

So let’s take exercise and losing weight, that is probably the biggest New Years resolution. So why are you doing it, if you are waiting for a specific day, than that was self motivated, not Spirit led. Colossians 3:23 says, work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. I don’t think any Follower of God could start a New Years resolution and call it worship for God.

Choose TODAY who you will serve…you are not promised tomorrow, so don’t wait for 2017…don’t wait until you feel like you are ready to “settle down,” choose TODAY.
